Grow Active
The programme adopted a holistic and occupation-focused approach, recognizing preschool years as a critical developmental period for establishing lifelong habits related to physical activity, nutrition, sleep, play, and participation in everyday routines. Activities were integrated within the preschool environment and daily routines to promote children’s engagement in active play, movement exploration, healthy eating experiences, social interaction, and self-care skills.
The intervention focused on creating supportive and inclusive environments where healthy choices became natural and enjoyable for children. Sessions included structured and unstructured movement activities, play-based learning, sensory and motor experiences, group games, storytelling, creative activities, and opportunities for children to develop knowledge and skills related to healthy lifestyles. Particular emphasis was placed on reducing sedentary behaviour, encouraging participation in physical activities, and promoting positive attitudes toward movement and wellbeing.
An important component of the intervention was collaboration with preschool teachers and families. Educators were supported to embed health-promoting practices within the classroom, while parents received guidance and resources related to healthy routines, nutrition, movement, sleep, and participation in everyday activities. This collaborative approach aimed to strengthen consistency between the preschool and home environments.
The Grow Active intervention was also guided by principles of inclusivity, participation, equity, and child-centered practice. Activities were adapted to meet the developmental needs and abilities of all children, ensuring opportunities for engagement, social participation, and enjoyment. Through a preventive and health-promoting perspective, the intervention aimed to enhance children’s wellbeing, participation in daily life activities, and long-term healthy lifestyle development.
