Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Often presents with early differences in communication, social interaction, play, or sensory responses before age 3
May involve repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, and intense focus on specific topics or routines
Diagnosis is clinical, based on behavioural criteria (DSM-5 or ICD-11), usually confirmed by a multidisciplinary team
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person perceives, interacts with, and responds to the world. It is characterized by differences in communication, social interaction, sensory processing, and behavior patterns. Autism is a spectrum, meaning individuals have unique strengths and support needs that may vary over time and context.
These differences can impact participation in everyday life occupations such as self-care, play, education, social relationships, sleep, and community involvement. Occupational therapy supports individuals on the autism spectrum in navigating challenges and building on their abilities to promote engagement, autonomy, and well-being across all domains of life.
